Glaucoma Treatment: Causes and Fixes

Appearing within the eye, glaucoma is a disease that causes changes in vision. While there are usually no symptoms, if excess pressure is felt in the eye it should be checked by a medical professional immediately. While it can appear in anyone, risk factors include:

●    Anyone over the age of 40
●    African Americans and Mexican Americans
●    Those with a family history of the disease

The most common form the disease takes is open-angle glaucoma, which has no symptoms. The fluid in the eye is draining too slowly and can build up, causing damage to the optic nerve and leading to the disease; open-angle glaucoma. There are other forms the disease takes where the fluid doesn’t drain at all, and ones that are congenital and appear in children, both of which should have surgery performed immediately. Injury can also cause glaucoma by preventing the normal drainage of fluids, so having a check-up after an injury near the eyes is recommended.

Thankfully, at The Eye Center there are treatments that will reduce the need for constant medication, and potentially remove them entirely! Located in Columbia, South Carolina, The Eye Center is up to date with the latest technology to diagnose and provide treatment for glaucoma. Every physician at the center knows and excels in administering all three of the treatments available to ensure health and comfort.

While there is no cure yet, The Eye Center has three ways to lower eye pressure and prevent the disease from getting worse:

●    Medication in the form of eye drops to help lower pressure in the eye
●    iStent, which is a miniature medical device placed in the eye to allow drainage
●    Laser treatment, which is a simple surgery that allows the eye to drain more fluid

Medication may need to be applied consistently by patients for the rest of their lives, but an iStent can be applied during a simple surgical procedure and can be combined with other procedures including cataract surgery.

The Eye Center P.A. in Columbia, SC, has the equipment needed to perform laser surgery and the skill to do it in an easy, painless manner. The Eye Center has the technology and skill to make glaucoma a nonexistent concern, so if there is the possibility of risk, a quick visit will put all those worries to rest.
